Getting Out Of A Work Slump
by Keefe Kayvan on Friday, 17 April 2015 at 10:30 am

There are times when I get into these periods of discouragement at work and I bet many do as well. Your mind gets so clouded (be it from personal or work factors) that work performance deteriorates and only seems to worsen with each attempt to remedy the situation. Negative emotions just keeps pilling on and on until there is no more motivation left. Whatever it is, slumps shouldn't be allowed to continue for long!

1. Stop brooding about past failures!

Every try can produce a different result. Who is to say that the same trick won’t work twice? (Don’t keep banging your head onto a wall though! Be smart about it.) And if they don't, use different approaches to tackle the problem. Sometimes, the most unexpected ones work! Opportunities are everywhere. Just like a matching game, we’ll never know for sure if there will be a match until we act on it and we only really fail when we choose to give up. It’s perfectly normal to feel disheartened but we have to always remember to kick ourselves up, stay focused on the bigger picture and keep pressing on!

2. Stop overthinking!

Where do all these negative feelings stem from? Our thoughts. Our circumstances cannot directly affect our feelings. Imagine this: you are having a horrible day, you lose your wallet, your boss rejects your project proposal, and then your friend comments on how ugly your shoes are. You would probably feel insulted and annoyed. Now imagine a different scenario: you are having an awesome day, you bank in your pay check, your significant other surprises you with takeaway during your lunch break, and then your friend makes the same comment. Would you feel the same way? I think not. You might even laugh it off taking it as a joke. No bad weather or snide comment or pressurising workload can make us feel terrible if we are able to choose and pay attention to the thoughts that empower us instead. Yes, it requires mental toughness to do so. Negative and positive thoughts are all simply just thoughts after all. They can be manipulated. It’s up to us to interpret and make them work in a way for us to improve.

3. Stop stressing over winning!

I am a competitive person. It’s human nature. People get anxious about winning and losing. However, there are times when we let our drive for perfection and victory consume us and thus strip ourselves from performing with clarity and enthusiasm. We become robots, stressed out on making things ideal but sadly, not special. Let loose! As cliche as it sounds, it's mostly about the journey to the destination, rather than the destination itself.

4. Stop isolating yourself!

Reconnect with old friends! Make new ones! People who we interact with and whom we have comfortable chemistry can have an impact on the way we perceive things and our emotions as well. Hanging out with people with a positive drive in life might be exactly what we need as a stepping stone to break out from our work slump. There is a big possibility that we can learn different strategies from one another that might prove effective in the problems we face. Moreover, the sheer moral support is already a massive positive energy that can be channeled into our thoughts.

Getting out of a slump is a slow process. The snowball effect is evidently present so it is really important to get started and keep the momentum going! I've started.

FYR Cycene Ond Drinc [Review]

Rustic decorations and storied wall murals lend FYR Cycene Ond Drinc a distinct antique charm, and they promise an intriguing experience that harks back to simpler times. I felt very at ease dining with my friends during the media tasting event with the inviting atmosphere and friendly service crew. Definitely a pleasant way to relax after a full day's work.

All of FYR's dishes are whipped up with a culinary practice that pays tribute to a time when food was cooked atop wood chunks and over blazing flames. Using lychee wood, the dishes are given an additional aromatic smoky note that tinges with sweetness.

Baked Freshly-Shucked Oysters (S$15)
The oysters were so fresh! The sweet paprika and chili padi added that distinct Southeast Asian kick to the shellfish goodness. Definitely a dish to get.

Baked Half Bone Marrow (S$15)
I actually tried to cut it thinking that it was a bruschetta! Haha! It was an unfamiliar taste to me but still delectable nonetheless. Again, the Asian spices brought a sense of nostalgia.

Baked Aubergine & Chickpea Ragout (S$10)
I liked it. Strangely enough, the chewiness of the eggplant and Parmesan was very satisfying.

Complimentary buttered cassava and mashed potatoes to accompany the mains.

Five-spice Half Chicken, Striploin, Asian-spiced Tiger Prawn (S$55)
This dish is one for the groups. On the mammoth sharing plate are 3 (well, 2. Noticed how I pushed the prawns back into the background?) tantalising mini-mains to indulge on. The chicken was very tender and the Striploin as well.

Grain-fed US Holstein Cow Ribeye 365 Days (S$32)
I was chewing delightfully away on the ribeye steak. I'd like to point out how yummy the salad was with the Java curry dressing.

Spiced Deboned Red Snapper with Sambal Belacan (S$25)
I'm a big fan of fish and this dish didn't disappoint! The crisp skin was packed with a nutty and spicy flavour that was so savoury, complimenting the soft flesh. A must-order. Delicious.

Whole Maine Lobster (S$35)
Yes, I do eat lobsters. Everyone tells me that they tastes the same as prawn! (Not true…) That's beside the point. That isn't the reason why I don't eat them.

Seafood Linguine (S$18)
I wasn't expecting much from this initially but after a taste, I was binging on it! The lobster bisque and laksa leaves added so much flavour to the linguine and seafood that it was just mouth-watering. So yummy!

Baked Pistachio Melt & Pandan Ice Cream (S$10)
The tasting ended on a very sweet note with this lava cake. I was fond of the pistachio melt and Pandan ice cream combination.

There were a few special concoctions of FYR's to choose from to accompany the meal and I tried the Hibiscus Mint and Ginger Lemongrass. Both were pretty light and refreshing.

The Pecking Order + The Entertainer App [Review]

[The Pecking Order]

A cosy cafe by day to a small-plates bar by night, The Pecking Order transform itself during weekday evenings to serve up savoury dishes for the after-work crowd. That was what I needed after an exhausting day at work and thanks to The Entertainer's invitation, I got it.

Before I get to the food, I would like to mention how incredible the ambience of the establishment was! I'll save the descriptive vocabulary and show you pictures instead.

I liked how the area is so well furnished with comfortable seating and the artworks scattered around brings about a very vintage modern interior. They aim to create an atmosphere where everyone can come together to share good times and food. I believe that they have succeeded.

Yes, yes… Food.

We were served an 11-course meal! Allow me to tantalise your tastebuds.

Burnt Aubergine with Piment D'espelette & Fried Garlic (S$10)
I didn't really get the flavour but I was brought up to eat my vegetables.

Roasted Potatoes with Blue Cheese, Black Truffle & Chives (S$12)
The aroma from this dish was so delectable! You can hardly go wrong with truffles and cheese. Absolutely delicious.

Mussels Escabeche with Shaved Fennels, Garlic Toasts (S$12)
I love mussels. It was a first for me to have them with garlic bread though, and it gave the mussels added sweetness.

Oyster & Prawn Fritters, Avocado Crema (S$12)
I didn't try this dish out because I detest prawns. No amount of oysters can persuade me otherwise. Next.

Salt Cod Fritters with Anchovy Aioli (S$10)
I liked the strong difference in texture between the crisp batter and fluffy fish flesh.

Pressed Sandwich of Sea Urchin & Coppa Ham (S$18)
It was my first time trying sea urchins and it was a pleasant one. A tad briny, but the sweetness did stand out together with the ham.

Sea Tiger Prawns with Crustacean Butter & Seaweed Sauce (S$16)
No. No. No. I won't! No!

Braised Lamb Ribs, Carrot Mash & Gremolata (S$24)
I love gnawing on a good lamb rib. This was definitely the standout dish for me. The flesh was so succulent and the carrot mash was delightfully sweet!

Grilled Kurobuta Pork Jowl with Honey & Soy, Red Cabbage (S$22)
The Pecking Order seems to enjoy infusing sweets into their dishes. Glazed with honey and soy, they sure went all out on these tender bite sized pork slices. Yummy.

Wagyu Hanger Steak, Red Pepper "Chimmichurri" & Portobello (S$28)
The beef was just chewy enough for my liking and the mushrooms were sour. I like sour. Another standout dish.

Chocolate & Salted Egg Custard Lava Cake, Vanilla Ice Creme (S$10)
I take pleasure in watching egg yolks flow. A great way to end the meal on a sweet note. (Well, most of the dishes were sweet.)

My accompanying grape cocktail for the meal.

Instagram Unfollowers
by Keefe Kayvan on Monday, 16 March 2015 at 6:30 pm
,

Many active Instagram users are probably using mobile apps to manage and track their followers and followings, as well as provide account statistics for their knowledge. I am one of these users. I have to know the analytics to give accurate numbers to potential collaborators. I want to know when people unfollow me.

People follow and unfollow me on IG all the time. It's perfectly normal. People grow and lose interest. Some just want to try gaining easy followers, following then unfollowing when I don't do the same. There are a few who take it to the next level going around leaving comments like #f4f and #followmeback. I will follow you if I want to! Them bitches be making me sound like their damned son! Who are you to tell me what to do?!

What gets to me though, is when someone who I follow unfollows me. You see… I only follow friends, relatives and acquaintances. (Well, I do make a few exceptions for my favourite celebrities, cutie pies and accounts with really aesthetically pleasing pictures.) So when that happens, I assume that a bridge has been burnt. It saddens me cause I am one who treasures relationships with others.

…For a bit. I'm definitely not going to be played for a fool. Why would I want to be at the end of a unreciprocated relationship? Ain't nobody got time for that! I'm going to hit that unfollow button faster than your Instagram profile can load. Goodbye, the end. I have a good mind to block their sorry ass but I am after all a habitual online stalker.

I do wonder about their rationale for doing so. Were my pictures getting too boring? Were they offensive somehow? (Maybe they were sick of my face? Haha!) I definitely am not inactive! I'm currently following 745 accounts on Instagram and almost half of them are inactive! I did not unfollow them. I personally feel like it's basic courtesy. (At least give me a heads up?) I guess it's really naive of me to expect the same from others. When am I ever going to learn?

My indifference turns to annoyance when these people actually follow me back and start liking my pictures to get my attention! Haha! Don't make me scoff at the desperation, please. Yes, I do see the notifications. I am not going to follow back. You are dead to me. Ship KAYVAN has sailed. Stop.

So much for wondering if it was a fault at my end. You all just want your followers to following ratio to be like 10:1! Chances are, that will never happen. Hope the risk was worth my loyalty. Do you think that ratio will prove to the world that ya'll are so interesting and all? Well, you are. Interestingly gutless. Why do you want to follow me back? Are you still concerned with my opinion? Sit your ass down and take an advice from yours truly—don't give two hoots about people that don't matter. From the looks of it, ya'll can't walk the talk. I absolutely cannot stand people who are so desultory. If you're going to be an egomaniacal bitch, see it through to the end. Even Gushcloud is continuing to fight on despite already having a foot in the grave! (I do not condone their practices but their resilience is definitely applaudable.) Don't go chasing waterfalls because you'll be cascaded into pulp.

I'm sure there are some who might feel that I'm over-thinking. It's 2015, honey. Your Instagram account is practically your ID.

10/04/2015 Update:
I'll be unfollowing some inactive accounts, especially those that have never engaged on my posts before. Those who I have not interacted enough with recently too. Dust bunnies are overpopulating!

Cineleisure's Next Online Sensation 4 [Entry Post + Audition Clip]

[Entry Post]

Cathay Cineleisure Orchard. What's the first thing that pops into your mind? If it is the Cathay Cineplex, we already have a common leisure interest—movies!

I take my movie experiences pretty seriously. (I take any experiences that I pay for seriously.) I'm the type of customer who wants the best value for my money and when that is met, I sing praises graciously. That is why I always recommend Cathay Cineplexes to anyone who is planning to get their movie fix, especially so if I'm joining. You'll see why…

1. Movie Diversity

Their movie listings are always aplenty and of various genres to cater to different audiences. Apart from blockbusters, Cathay Cineplexes also screen movies that would otherwise be deemed unprofitable in the Singapore market. I never fail to be spoilt for choices patronising their cinema.

2. Promotions

Students, senior citizens and privileged card holders are always in for numerous discounts and incentives during their movie experience at Cathay Cineplexes. More often than not, I purchase my tickets online to avoid disappointment and their MasterCard promotion has helped me save quite a sum of cash.

3. Facilities

Yes, Cathay Cineplexes have state-of-the-art projection and sound systems but what really got me hooked are their spacious cushioned seats. It is an absolute bliss to be able to exit the cinema after a movie without my legs numbed and tingling. Their rows of seats are also aligned at a steeper gradient to ensure that vision of the screen is not compromised. I prefer getting the couple seats because there will be additional space when the armrest is lifted and they are priced the same as the individuals.

21/03/2015 Update:

I was very driven to snatch the title of Cineleisure's Next Online Sensation, but I will no longer be participating in the competition. Many thanks to everyone who was rooting for me! Please continue to do so cause I need your love to slay. I've got bigger fish to fry.
